Methodology and practice: an interdisciplinary postgraduate workshop for the Study of Wider Europe

Centre for the Study of Wider Europe First Postgraduate Workshop
National University of Ireland, Maynooth
13–14 November 2009

The Centre for the Study of Wider Europe (CSWE) is holding its First Postgraduate Workshop on 13–14 November 2009. The organisers extend a welcome to all those researching on, or interested in, the study of ‘Wider Europe’. We have a limited number of spaces available for those interesting in presenting at this workshop (see criteria and monetary allowances below). The organisers also have limited space for those wishing to participate in the workshop audience alongside the invited academics and fellow students. There is no fee to attend this workshop but expenses of visitors who are not presenting cannot be covered. Your intentions to attend as a presenter should be emailed to us (workshop2009@widereurope.ie or seamus.m.coll@nuim.ie) before Wednesday 30th September 2009.

The title and theme of the workshop is ‘Methodology and practice: an interdisciplinary postgraduate workshop for the Study of Wider Europe’. The unique possibility to meet other people, working on comparable areas, but in different disciplines and with different methods, offers an opportunity for discussion with fellow graduate students not usually afforded to students working on ‘Wider Europe’. To capitalise on this gathering of students, the workshop will also include specialist academics from the various disciplines represented, who will add to a scholarly discussion of the individual research approaches of the invited graduate students.

Through individual presentations from graduate students, the workshop will discuss the merits and challenges of using an interdisciplinary approach to postgraduate research, including the theoretical and methodological frameworks applied to the specifics of the research project. Participants will give a detailed account of the methodological approaches being applied to their research, rather than an overall thematic evaluation of the research project, through an individual assessment of how interdisciplinary methods may or may not apply to the specifics of the research. Participants will be grouped accordingly and a full programme of these groupings will be provided to each participant in advance of the workshop.

Since this is a workshop rather than a conference, each participant will be given 20 minutes to speak, followed directly by 15 minutes of questions and feedback from an audience, including established academics from all disciplines mentioned above.

The organisers see this event as an initial step to the creation of a postgraduate network for the discussion and study of ‘Wider Europe’, thus allowing for the launching of a Postgraduate Forum/Research Network during the workshop

Submission of abstracts

An abstract/outline of your presentation is kindly requested for our information (100–150 words). This should be based on your original postgraduate research experience, and deal with one or more of the aspects mentioned above.

Please include the following information with your abstract:
- the title of your presentation/paper, to appear on our programme
- a brief curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and scholarly presentations and other relevant details (e.g., membership of societies)

The Centre would kindly ask your permission to reproduce some of these details in a small booklet as part of our Workshop Package for other participants and guests.

The deadline for the receipt of abstracts will be announced in due course, along with general guidelines on the workshop format. Abstracts should be e-mailed to the following address: workshop2009@widereurope.ie

Presenters: Accommodation, allowances

There is no workshop fee

Maynooth is served by a variety of public and private transport companies. Dublin Airport is also widely served by various airlines. Specific details are available on request.

A workshop dinner will take place on the evening of Friday 13th. Participants are requested to make a contribution to this dinner (€50, payable upon registration). Please indicate to the organisers if you DO NOT wish to attend the dinner.
