The NUI Maynooth Centre for the Study of Wider Europe
The NUI Maynooth Centre for the Study of Wider Europe (CSWE) was established at NUI Maynooth in early 2008 as a dedicated inter-disciplinary centre of excellence in research and teaching on Europe. The main contributing departments from within NUI Maynooth are anthropology, history and sociology.
The Centre's focus on Central, Eastern, and South-eastern Europe makes it unique in Ireland; in addition to promoting scholarship on this region, the Centre seeks to develop academic and professional links involving staff and students between Ireland and Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe.
Objectives
The Centre aims to produce high quality academic research as well as to engage with both government and civil society, bringing multiple perspectives to a critical examination of Ireland's relations with Wider Europe both within and beyond the European Union. In the aftermath of the eastern enlargement of the EU in 2004 and 2007 and prospective enlargement to the western Balkans region over the next decade, the Centre seeks to forge substantive links with key academic and policy-making institutions in Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe in an effort to further intellectual exchange and teaching excellence.
Public seminars hosted by the Centre will promote understanding of the diverse historical, social, cultural and political dimensions of wider Europe and seek to engender debate on Ireland's rapidly developing links with the region. The Centre will also seek to engage with national and international media outlets on issues such as EU enlargement, identity, migration, EU foreign policy and EU-Russian relations.
One of the principal purposes of the Centre is to provide support for and strengthen the identity of faculty and students involved in the BA European Studies degree and the BA Politics degree. The Centre hopes to introduce more undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a focus on Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe.
